About AI training work
AI training (data labeling or annotation) is the human work that teaches models how to understand and use language. Tasks include writing and refining model responses, evaluating output quality, and producing culturally appropriate dialogue that improves model behavior.
This role centers on writing and editing Cantonese text to make conversational AI more natural, accurate, and culturally relevant for Cantonese-speaking users.
The role
We are hiring a remote contract Cantonese Creative Writer to generate and improve dialogue used to train AI chatbots and LLMs. You will create authentic Cantonese responses from prompts and edit AI-generated text to raise overall quality.
Work type: contractor, part-time. Data type: text. Label types include prompt-response writing (SFT), question answering, and general text generation.
- Pay: USD $19 per hour.
- Schedule: flexible; minimum 10 hours/week, preferred 20+ hours/week.
- Location: remote — worldwide applicants accepted.
What you'll do
You will write original Cantonese content, rewrite or improve AI-generated responses, and ensure outputs are culturally appropriate and linguistically natural across registers and dialectal variations.
Examples of day-to-day tasks include producing short conversational replies, drafting longer exemplar responses, and editing model outputs for clarity, tone, and correctness.
- Generate natural Cantonese responses to given prompts and scenarios.
- Edit and polish AI-generated text for accuracy, grammar, and cultural authenticity.
- Follow project instructions and style guidelines to produce consistent outputs.
- Deliver work within agreed timelines while maintaining high quality.
Requirements
Candidates must be highly proficient in written Cantonese and able to write in multiple styles with excellent grammar. A basic understanding of English is required to follow instructions and communicate with the team.
We expect applicants to meet the following qualifications and preferences; required items are listed first.
- Strong command of written Cantonese Chinese across styles and registers.
- Basic English proficiency to follow written instructions.
- Editing and proofreading skills to ensure high-quality deliverables.
- Preferred: 5+ years of creative or content writing experience in Cantonese (preferred but not mandatory).
- Highly preferred: prior writing experience on data-labeling/AI platforms such as Remotasks, Outlier, Appen, DataAnnotation.tech, or similar (writing tasks specifically).
- Experience using AI chatbot tools like ChatGPT is an advantage but not required.
Portfolio, experience & education
A portfolio of published Cantonese work (online or print) is preferred but not required. During interview you will be asked to provide links or descriptions of your published works if you do not have links.
We will also ask about your past experience with writing tasks on labeling platforms and about your highest level of education.
- Portfolio: preferred but optional — be prepared to share links or descriptions.
- Platform experience: prefer candidates who have written responses on labeling sites (not just rating/evaluation work).
- Education: applicants will be asked their highest level of education during the interview.
Interview and live test
Important: the interview includes a short written test. Test prompts will be provided in English and Cantonese, and you must respond in Cantonese. The quality of your Cantonese responses is a core part of the evaluation.
You should be prepared to state how many years/months of writing experience you have on data-labeling platforms and to discuss your portfolio and editing process.
- Final test prompts (respond in Cantonese):
- QUESTION 1 (Describe a Character): 請用創造性語言簡單描述一個獨特而生動的角色。你的描述應至少包含兩個顯著特徵或特性。
- QUESTION 2 (Draft a Professional Email): 請撰寫一封簡短的電子郵件給你的上司,請求對你準備的「季度財務報告」提供反饋。請集中討論數據分析和呈現風格。
- QUESTION 3 (Write a Persuasive Email): 請撰寫一封簡潔的電子郵件,說服一位內向的朋友自願作為當地活動的嘉賓演講者參加。強調參與的兩個好處,並處理他們可能有的一個潜在顧慮。
