About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help people start and grow careers teaching AI — discover projects, build a profile, and apply in minutes. Working with OpenTrain means joining the human side of how modern AI systems learn.

  • OpenTrain connects contributors to projects that train and evaluate AI.
  • This role is part of a wider effort to create high-quality training data for models.

About AI Training Work

AI training (data labeling/annotation) is the human work that modern models learn from: creating accurate examples, evaluating model outputs, and producing high-quality ground truth. These projects are typically remote, flexible, and accessible to people with domain knowledge or technical skills.

This assignment focuses on SQL: your queries will become gold-standard answers used to teach models how to translate natural language questions into correct SQL.

  • Work is 100% remote and contractor-based.
  • Projects can be part-time and flexible, but this one requires concentrated availability during the scheduled window.

The Role

You will author perfect SQL queries that, when run against a supplied database schema and data, return the correct answers for 100 sports-related user queries. The goal is 'gold' quality: precise, efficient, and readable SQL that directly answers each natural-language request.

You will receive access to the database, a labeling tool (listed as OTHER), project context and tribal knowledge, and direct support from an existing team to clarify nuances and edge cases.

  • Produce one gold SQL query per user question (100 queries total).
  • Work closely with the team to resolve schema or interpretation questions.

What You'll Do

Translate natural-language sports queries into accurate, production-ready SQL statements. Ensure queries run correctly against the provided database and return the expected results.

Document any assumptions, join logic, filters, aggregations, and edge-case handling so reviewers can validate the query intent and correctness.

  • Write, test, and refine SQL for each user query.
  • Use the provided labeling tool to submit queries and notes.
  • Log any schema clarifications, missing metadata, or ambiguous queries for team review.

Requirements

You must be a native or highly fluent English speaker, have strong intermediate-level experience in SQL, and be familiar with advanced SQL constructs (joins, window functions, subqueries, aggregations, CTEs, performance considerations). Data-labeling experience is required so you understand annotation quality expectations and documenting decisions.

This role is open worldwide and is contractor / part-time. You must be available for East Coast (U.S.) working hours during the project window and able to commit 20+ hours per week.

  • Fluent English (native or highly fluent).
  • Intermediate+ SQL expertise and experience with advanced queries.
  • Prior data-labeling or annotation experience preferred.
  • Availability during East Coast hours from Monday 24th to Wednesday 26th for this project window.
  • Able to commit 20+ hours per week as a contractor.

Project Details, Schedule, And Tools

The dataset and full database schema will be provided. You will also receive access to the labeling tool (OTHER) used for submitting SQL and notes. Support is available from the existing team to transfer necessary context and tribal knowledge.

Work is scheduled for East Coast hours from Monday 24th to Wednesday 26th (project-specific window given by the team). Outside that concentrated window, you will still need to meet the 20+ hours/week commitment as agreed with the project lead.

  • Data type: TEXT; label type: TEXT_GENERATION.
  • You will be given DB access and test data to validate queries.
  • Support and clarification will be available from the existing team.

Compensation, Employment Type, And How To Apply

This is a contractor, part-time role paid per hour at $40 USD/hour. The project is worldwide/remote. Exact engagement length and milestones will be defined by the project lead.

To apply, highlight your SQL experience and any past work producing gold-standard queries or annotation deliverables. Explain your availability for East Coast hours during the stated project window and confirm you can commit 20+ hours/week.

  • Pay: $40 USD per hour, paid per hour (PAY_PER_HOUR).
  • Employment types: CONTRACTOR, PART_TIME.
  • When applying, include examples of advanced SQL you’ve written and a short note on prior labeling experience.
