About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is a central job board for data-labeling and AI-training work. We aggregate roles from many AI companies and labeling platforms so applicants can find opportunities in one place and apply quickly.

  • Free to create an account and apply.
  • Focuses on human-driven tasks that improve AI systems.

About AI Training Work

AI training (data labeling / annotation / human feedback) is the human side of machine learning: people create, edit, and evaluate examples so models learn to produce accurate, safe, and useful language.

This role supports conversational AI by supplying natural, culturally accurate Japanese responses and improving model-generated text so chatbots behave more like native speakers.

  • Work is usually fully remote and flexible.
  • Many projects need language fluency, attention to detail, or domain knowledge rather than formal credentials.

The Role

We are hiring a Creative Writer (Japanese) on a contract, part-time basis to produce and refine dialogue used to train LLM chatbots.

You will generate authentic, culturally relevant responses to prompts and edit AI outputs so they read naturally across dialects and contexts.

  • Employment type: Contractor, Part-time.
  • Work location: Remote / Worldwide.
  • Data type: TEXT; label types: PROMPT_RESPONSE_WRITING_SFT, TEXT_GENERATION, TEXT_SUMMARIZATION.
  • Labeling software: OTHER.

Pay, Schedule, and Time Commitment

Compensation is hourly at USD 20 per hour. The role offers flexible scheduling.

The project requests a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week, with a preferred commitment of 20+ hours per week when possible. (Listed timeRequirement: Less than 20 hours/week.)

  • Rate: $20 / hour (PAY_PER_HOUR).
  • Minimum: 10 hours/week.
  • Preferred: 20+ hours/week when available.

What You’ll Do

Produce original Japanese responses from prompts and improve AI-generated text so it is accurate, fluent, and engaging.

Apply knowledge of regional dialects and cultural nuance to make chatbot interactions feel realistic and relatable.

  • Write creative dialogue and sample responses for chatbot training prompts.
  • Edit and proofread AI outputs for grammar, tone, and cultural appropriateness.
  • Adapt style across registers (formal, casual, professional) and dialects as required.

Requirements and Qualifications

Applicants must have strong written Japanese skills and a proven background in creative or content writing in Japanese. Basic English is required to follow instructions and communicate with the team.

Prior experience performing WRITING tasks on online data-labeling or AI-training platforms (Remotasks, Outlier, Appen, DataAnnotation.tech, etc.) is highly preferred; rating/evaluation experience alone is less relevant.

  • Preferred: 5+ years creative or content writing experience in Japanese (preferred but not mandatory).
  • Required: Strong command of written Japanese, editing and proofreading ability.
  • Preferred: Experience using AI chatbot tools (e.g., ChatGPT) but not essential.
  • Portfolio: Links to published works in Japanese are preferred (online or print).
  • Education: Please be ready to state your highest level of education during interview.
  • Language: Native/Fluent Japanese and basic English for team communication.

Interview Process and Required Test

During the interview you will be asked about platform experience and writing history. You should be prepared to state how many years or months you have spent doing writing tasks on data-labeling platforms and to provide a portfolio link or descriptions of your published works if links are unavailable.

A short live test in Japanese is mandatory and will strongly influence your qualification score. Questions will be provided in Japanese and you must respond in Japanese.

  • Interview questions will include: years/months of platform writing experience and portfolio review.
  • You will be asked to state your highest level of education.

Who Should Apply

Apply if you are a skilled Japanese writer who enjoys shaping conversational AI and have experience (or strong interest) in writing for model-training tasks.

Candidates with prior writing tasks on data-labeling platforms and a portfolio of published Japanese work will be competitive.

  • Native or fluent Japanese writers with strong editing skills.
  • Writers with 5+ years of experience in creative/content writing are preferred.
  • People who can work remotely and communicate basic information in English.

How to Apply

Submit your application through OpenTrain with your resume and a link to your Japanese writing portfolio if available. Be sure to describe any prior writing tasks on data-labeling platforms and include how many months/years you performed those tasks.

If you do not have links to published work, include short descriptions of representative pieces so we can assess writing experience.

  • Include: resume, portfolio link (or descriptions), and platform-writing experience duration.
  • Applications are reviewed for writing skill, relevant platform experience, and ability to complete the Japanese test during interview.
