About OpenTrain
OpenTrain aggregates data-labeling and AI-training opportunities from many companies and platforms, so you can find work in one place instead of hunting dozens of sites. Creating an account is free and applying takes only a few minutes.
We list short-term and ongoing contractor projects that help train real AI systems by collecting, curating, and reviewing the examples models learn from.
About AI Training Work
AI training (data labeling or human-feedback work) is the human side of building intelligent systems. Experts prepare and verify examples — transcriptions, annotations, code, or explanations — that teach models how to behave accurately and safely.
This role directly shapes model behavior by producing precise OS explanations, scripts, troubleshooting sequences, and evaluation judgments used as training data.
- Remote, flexible contractor work that often requires no prior platform-specific experience.
- Meaningful contributions: your technical judgments will be baked into AI behavior.
The Role
We are hiring an Operating Systems Subject Matter Expert (SME) based in India to write, review, and refine AI training datasets focused on traditional Operating System management. You will document core OS concepts, troubleshooting workflows, and scripting tasks so models can understand and replicate real-world scenarios.
This is a part-time contractor position, paid hourly at USD 25/hour, with total weekly commitment under 20 hours. Candidates must be located in India and demonstrate C1-level English proficiency.
- Data type: Computer code / programming and technical explanations.
- Label types: coding/coding evaluation and rating tasks.
- Labeling software: Other (platform details provided during onboarding).
- Employment: Contractor, Part-time.
What You'll Do
Produce, refine, and document high-quality training examples and explanations that capture OS behavior, troubleshooting, and automation. Review and correct dataset entries to ensure technical accuracy and clarity.
- Write clear step-by-step troubleshooting workflows for OS issues (performance, resource management, service failures).
- Author and review Bash or PowerShell scripts and explain their logic for dataset inclusion.
- Document cross-platform configuration examples for Windows, Linux, and Unix environments.
- Review candidate outputs, rate technical correctness, and provide precise corrections and commentary.
- Ensure all dataset items meet clarity, precision, and reproducibility standards.
Requirements
You must meet all of the following technical and administrative requirements to be considered.
- 7+ years of professional experience managing and configuring Operating Systems (Windows, Linux, or Unix).
- In-depth knowledge of system processes, kernel management, and resource allocation.
- Proficiency in scripting languages such as Bash, PowerShell, or Python.
- Experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V, VirtualBox).
- Familiarity with system performance monitoring tools (e.g., top, htop, ps, Task Manager).
- Understanding of OS-level security practices and patch management.
- Located in India and fluent at C1-level English.
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to produce high-quality work independently.
Interview & Assessment (must-know)
At the start of the interview you will be informed that a technical/skill test and a live interview are required. Dishonesty during the interview or test will result in a permanent ban from the OpenTrain AI platform.
The interview will include specific background questions and technical tasks. You must answer all required background items precisely; in particular you must state the exact number of hours per week you can commit (e.g., "12 hours per week", not a range). Interview answers will be recorded in the AI interview summary.
- Mandatory background items you will be asked to provide: highest level of education; years of experience managing/configuring Operating Systems; exact hours per week you can commit.
- Technical question 1: "A server running a Linux operating system is experiencing high CPU usage, and key services are becoming unresponsive. Walk me through how you would identify and resolve the issue."
- Technical question 2: "Write a Bash or PowerShell script to monitor disk space usage on a server and automatically send an alert if usage exceeds 90%."
- Technical question 3: "What steps would you take to secure a newly installed Windows Server operating system before deploying it to production?"
How To Apply
Create a free OpenTrain account, complete your profile, and submit your application. Expect a brief screening, then a scheduled live technical interview and skill test for shortlisted candidates.
If selected, you will onboard as a contractor and begin receiving tasks. Compensation is hourly at USD 25/hour. Prepare to demonstrate real-world OS troubleshooting, scripting, and documentation skills during the assessment.
- Be ready to show examples of past OS work and to write/debug scripts during the technical test.
- Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis; providing clear, specific availability (exact hours/week) speeds processing.
- No additional software or paid subscriptions are required to apply; a reliable computer and internet connection are necessary.
