About AI Training Work
AI training (also called data labeling, annotation, or human-feedback work) is the human side of building artificial intelligence. People prepare, evaluate, and improve examples that models learn from — for speech this means recording prompts, judging pronunciation, and helping models sound natural.
This role focuses on accent and fluency evaluation: your feedback will directly shape how a chatbot speaks Shanghainese, helping the model match natural human accents.
The Role
We are hiring linguists with strong Shanghainese expertise to evaluate AI-generated speech. You will interact with an AI model by recording audio prompts, generating AI responses, and rating those responses for pronunciation and fluency.
This is a contract, part-time position (less than 20 hours/week) paid hourly at USD 23. The project is worldwide and fully remote — you must provide your own laptop or PC and a stable internet connection.
- Position type: Contractor, Part-time
- Pay structure: PAY_PER_HOUR at USD 23.00/hour
- Weekly time: Less than 20 hours/week
- Location: Remote, worldwide applicants accepted
What You'll Do
Your primary objective is to improve the AI’s Shanghainese speech naturalness. You will evaluate audio outputs using a 1–7 naturalness scale and iterate with the model until at least two (and up to five) responses achieve a perfect 7/7 rating for accent and fluency.
- Record audio prompts in Shanghainese and submit them to the system.
- Generate or review multiple AI responses and rate each for pronunciation and fluency (not content).
- Provide structured, actionable feedback to guide iterative improvements.
- Repeat iterations — some items may require 10, 20, or more attempts to reach target quality.
Requirements
Applicants must meet the following hard requirements and preferences drawn from the project description.
- Minimum 2 years of experience using Shanghainese (Shanghai dialect).
- Strong grasp of Shanghainese phonetics, accent variation, and fluency patterns.
- Access to your own laptop or PC and a reliable internet connection.
- Comfort providing clear, structured feedback focused on pronunciation and fluency.
- Experience in speech evaluation, linguistic analysis, or accent validation is preferred but not mandatory.
Interview & Evaluation Process
Hiring includes a structured interview and an assessment of your linguistic and evaluation skills. Expect conversational but professional questions about your Shanghainese experience, phonetic features you consider important, and how you would iteratively improve AI outputs.
You may be asked to explain how you'd approach multiple iterations, which pronunciation features you'd target at each step, and to demonstrate giving actionable feedback. The interview will confirm your ability to identify accent and fluency issues and to communicate improvements clearly.
- Interview tone: Professional yet conversational; detailed responses encouraged.
- Assessment criteria: linguistic accuracy, speech evaluation skills, iterative improvement mindset, and clarity of communication.
- Tasks during selection may include short practical rating or feedback exercises.
Project Details & Tools
This project uses text-based labeling plus audio recording and review workflows: you will submit recordings, evaluate AI audio outputs, and enter ratings and feedback into the project tool. The listed labeling software is OTHER, so you may work in a bespoke web platform or proprietary tool.
Label types for this role are EVALUATION_RATING and TEXT_GENERATION. The project’s data type is listed as TEXT, but the task requires recording and assessing spoken responses for accent and fluency.
- Label types: EVALUATION_RATING, TEXT_GENERATION
- Labeling software: OTHER (proprietary or custom platform)
- Data type: TEXT (task includes spoken audio submission and evaluation)
Who Should Apply
Apply if you are fluent in Shanghainese, have at least two years of practical experience, and enjoy detailed linguistic evaluation work. This role suits people who like iterative improvement, can provide concise, actionable feedback, and prefer flexible, remote, part-time work.
If you have prior experience in speech or accent evaluation, linguistic analysis, or language instruction, your skills will be especially relevant — but motivated candidates without formal experience are welcome if they meet the language and equipment requirements.
- Ideal for language specialists, dialect speakers, linguists, or experienced native-level speakers.
- Good fit for those seeking flexible, remote work and short weekly commitments.
